Capturing the Studium and Punctum

What makes us look? What draws us in?

In 1890 Roland Barthes, a French literary theorist, writes a small book called Camera Lucida and he calls this observation and processing the Punctum and the Studium.

Although this theory directly relates it to a photograph and the spectator, I like to think it might apply to visual precessing in the art world as well.
